Conference Scope

Broadband communications is increasingly becoming an essential component of the infrastructure of any modern Society. Wireless communications is the primary means of communications in several cases such as in delivering broadband services to rural communities, providing emergency communications in cases of disaster, as well as supporting public safety services.

There are several socio-economical factors that derive the fast adoption of wireless technology as a primary means for communications, such as:

  • It is a cost-effective way to reducing the digital divide that exists today between developed and developing Countries. This divide, if it is not quickly addressed, will severely impact the economical growth of many developing countries.
  • It is the only means of providing fast recovery of communications, dissemination of information, and co-ordination of rescue efforts in times of natural and/or man-made disasters.
  • It is an important driving factor in newly emerging services such as using sensor networks in enhancing the safety of roadways, improving the security of airports, banks, and other sensitive locations, as well as providing emergency heath services to the elder and those in-need.

All these objectives, very close adhering to the original mandate put on Radio by Guglielmo Marconi himself more than one century ago, prove to be even more fundamental for the Society of the 21st Century. With WRECOM 2007 we intend to promote a forum in which the technological advances express themselves under the special light of this fundamental mandate. Therefore, special attention will be devoted to low-cost, easy-to-install and maintain networks and to all key technologies able to provide broadband Internet access to the people anywhere. Socio-economical objectives of the wireless applications will be underlined, as well as their aims to promote the human being fundamental needs.

New communications technologies, as well as new techniques for improving the performance of existing systems, appear on the horizon, which will provide benefits for applications developments. Examples range from Satellite to WiFi to WiMAX and HiperLan, as well as ad-hoc and sensor networks. Furthermore, mobile networks based on cellular, TETRA standard or other similar Public Mobile Radio standards can provide advanced services and communication infrastructures. In this scenario also the satellite can find new positioning for communications in wide areas, due to the well known and effective broadcast capability and rapid implementation. In addition, integrated communications-navigation systems can provide increased benefits to the customer.
